Chuck Cooper has been a stage, film, and television actor for more than 40 years. In summer of 2019 he played Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing in New York's Central Park. That production was also filmed for Great Performances on PBS. Other Shakespearean roles include the title role in Othello, Brutus in Julius Caesar, and Caliban in The Tempest.
He received a Lortel Award for The Piano Lesson and two Drama Desk nominations for Choir Boy and The Life. On television he has guest starred in House of Cards, Madame Secretary, Nurse Jackie, and Gossip Girl.
Amen Corner was his first Broadway show in 1983 and he has since been in 16 Broadway shows including Caroline or Change, Finian’s Rainbow, and Amazing Grace. For his portrayal of the pimp Memphis in The Life he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
