Kathy A Perkins lighting designs have included international productions in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and South Africa. Domestic productions have been in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. She has been the resident lighting design at the St. Louis Black Rep since 1989. She has been nominated for many Audelco, Ovation, and Black Theatre Alliance Awards and has received the NAACP Image Award. In the 1990’s, she traveled to South Africa and helped teach lighting to Black South Africans at the end of apartheid.
As a historian, Kathy has published articles and resources focusing on behind-the-scenes women of color in the theatre. She has published six play anthologies focusing on African Diaspora Women. At Lincoln Center, she co-curated the exhibition ONSTAGE: A Century of African American Stage Design. For USITT, she wrote Their Place In History: African Americans Behind the Scenes.
